Another Criticism of Prince Hisahito: "Compared to Princess Aiko, he seems to place more importance on 'ME'".
The choice of high school for Prince Hisahito,
the only son of Prince Akishino and second in the order of succession to the
throne, was reported spectacularly before Christmas that he would be attending
Tsukuba University High School, a top preparatory school. This blog recently introduced the criticism by Mr. Yuji Odabe, Professor Emeritus at ShizuokaUniversity of Social Welfare, and on the 3rd of this month, the Asahi Shimbun-affiliated
online media "AERA.dot" carried an interview with Mr. Hideya
Kawanishi, a historian and Associate Professor at the Graduate School of
Humanities, Nagoya University, who is an expert on the symbolic emperor system.
Mr. Kawanishi's argument is as follows:
Prince Hisahito is currently attending the
junior high school attached to Ochanomizu University for Women. Ochanomizu
Women's University is a coeducational school up to junior high school, but from
high school on, it is an all-girls high school, and boys at the school have to
apply to other schools. The two schools that have emerged as possible
destinations are The First High School, Tokyo University of Agriculture and
Tsukuba University High School.
Mr.Kawanishi said: “I think it's important
to go to a school that you want to study at. In that sense, of course, I think
that Tokyo University of Agriculture First High School would be a good choice. Although he is
the future emperor, I think it would be desirable for him to go in the
direction he wants to go, without being bound by family traditions, because the
emperor is a mirror of society, given the flexibility of today's society.”
As Mr. Kawanishi pointed out, it is
important to go where one wants to study. However, the fact that he attended a
junior high school attached to Ochanomizu Women's University and said to go on
to Tokyo University of Agriculture the First High School and Tsukuba University
High School as his next schooling destination shows that Prince Akishino has
long been known to be "out of Gakushuin.”
It's not that you study how to be an
emperor at Gakushuin, it's that you study with a tutor. Therefore, there is no
such thing as an only study institution. The high school attached to Tsukuba
University, which has emerged as a possible destination for higher education,
is a prestigious school where 60% of the current students take the entrance
exam for the University of Tokyo and about 30 students are admitted to the
University of Tokyo every year. If he choose to go there because they have a
curriculum they really want to study, that's fine, but if he choose Tsukuba
University High School as a place to go to in order to go to Tokyo University,
then it would be encouraging the idea of bias towards Tokyo University, and I
think it's not a good idea for the person who will become the emperor to do
that. In a sense, I think it would be wrong for the person who would become the
Emperor to do something that would allow the overheating of entrance
examinations and embody the hierarchy of the academic society. I'm sure there will be some people who will say, ‘What about the
person who will become the Emperor?’”.
It is also reported that Prince and
Princess Akishino told people around them that they wanted to send Hisahito to
the University of Tokyo. Kawanishi says, "If he goes to the University of
Tsukuba High School, there will be speculation that he wants to be the first
emperor to come from the University of Tokyo. “ Kawanishi further suggests that
the emperor should avoid going to a school that may cause speculation.
“I think it's safe to say that the public
is taking a hard look at Akishino Family now that Mako's married to Kei Komuro.
At first, International Christian University (ICU), where Mako went to school,
was not viewed badly. Rather, it was seen as a "good choice of
university" that matched the internationalized society. Now, people are
saying that sending her to ICU was as bad as the fact that the nation was
turned off by Mako's marriage. Of course, the fact that this is where she met
Kei Komuro was one of the factors, but as a result, her decision to go to ICU
was also criticized. If it had been a time when the Akishino family had a good
reputation among the public, the public might have thought that it would be a
good choice for Prince Hisahito to go to Tokyo University of Agriculture the
First High School or Tsukuba University High School. In that sense, it's a pity
for Prince Hisahito that he had to go to school at a time when Mako was getting
married.”
Although it may be the Akishino family's
idea to "break away from Gakushuin," but it also makes us think,
"Why don't they just go to Gakushuin?”
“Indeed, some people may think that it is
not necessary to choose a school that causes halation and there might be a
choice of Gakushuin as where they go to study. Furthermore, I can say that if
it is Tokyo University of Agriculture the First High School, it is not hard to
understand, since I heard that Prince Hisahito likes insects. However, it is
said that he will use the "Affiliated School Prep System" to enter
the University of Tsukuba High School. This is a system that allows
students to go on to higher education at Ochanomizu Women's University Junior High
School and Tsukuba University Junior High School through a special entrance
examination, and it is done on a trial basis for five years only. This could
lead to speculation that this is a system designed for Prince Hisahito. Of
course, I don't think there will be any such "special exceptions,"
and I'm sure that careful explanations will be given, but the people don't see
the Akishino family in that light anymore. So, it may not be a good idea to
have the destination of his higher education decided in a way that invites
speculation.”
There are concerns that he will be compared
to Princess Aiko, who chose Gakushuin as a "safe" choice.
The issue of Mako's marriage seems to have been a matter of "ME," and now it will seem as if "ME" is also important in the education of Prince Hisahito. It seems that Her Imperial Highness Princess Toshinomiya Aiko dared to avoid halation. It is said that she is so smart that she could have gone to the University of Tokyo, but she did not choose to do so and went to Gakushuin University. That's what he would be compared to.”
