Prince Hisahito's "Privileged Admission" to Top-Class High School?
Prince Hisahito, the only son of Prince and Princess Akishino
The only son of the Akishino family, Prince
Hisahito (15), is currently a junior high school student attached to Ochanomizu
University for Women. Since only female students are allowed to enter the high
school attached to Ochanomizu University, Hisahito has no choice but to find
another school to go to. There have been a number of names of high schools that
have been discussed for his future.
However, it seems that his next step has
finally been decided. The following is a quote from "Bunshun Online"
dated December 22 and "Shukan Bunshun Digital" dated December 23.
For some time, Gakushuin, a traditional
school for members of the Imperial Family, had been considered the most
promising school for Hisahito.
“One of the reasons why it was considered
the most likely choice was because of the flap over the marriage issue of Mako,
the eldest daughter of the Akishino family, who went on to study at
International Christian University,” a reporter who cover the Imperial
Household Agency said, "The best place to choose a future empress would be
at Gakushuin, which has a long tradition of contact with the imperial family.”
Also, at one time, since Prince Akishino is
a visiting professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture, Tokyo University of
Agriculture First High School was suggested. However, Prince Hisahito's decision
was not one of these. A source familiar with the inner workings of the Akishino
family reveals the following;
Prince Hisahito has decided to go to
Tsukuba University High School (Tsukufu), and his parents are supporting him.
What kind of school is Tsukufu?
Tsukufu is a prestigious school with a
deviation score of 67 and produces about 30 students who are accepted to Tokyo
University every year, making it the top co-ed school in Japan. Most
preparatory schools offer a six-year integrated education that includes high
school classes in junior high school, but Tsukufu has a separate curriculum for
junior high and high school. Since it is difficult to have a gap in academic
ability between students who go on to higher education inside and those who go
on to higher education outside, Tsukufu is very popular among students who take
entrance exams from high school.
This year, the ratio of applicants who take the general entrance exam from high school is 3.2 times.
However, there is a
way for Prince Hisahito not to have to go through such a narrow gate.
It seems that His Highness will use the
"Affiliated School Admission System", according to the above reporter. The system was introduced in April 2017 and
is only available on a trial basis for five years until the start of the school
year in 2022, allowing students to enter schools affiliated with Ochanomizu
Women's University and Tsukuba University through a special entrance screening
that mainly consists of a document screening process.
And it seems that the faculty of the junior
high school attached to Ochanomizu University for Women has also given the
go-ahead for Prince Hisahito's application to Tsukufu.
When the magazine interviewed Dr. Kyosuke
Nagata, the president of Tsukuba University, which also has jurisdiction over
the annexed high school, he replied, "I don't know yet, but I think there
is a possibility.
Tsukuba University High School is also the
alma mater of Eizaburo Shoda, the father of Hisahito's grandmother, Empress
Michiko, and her younger brother Osamu.
In the past, Prince and Princess Akishino were said to have told people around them that they wanted their son to attend the University of Tokyo, but by pushing Hisahito to attend a top high school "with no Exam, just a document review", will they be one step closer to achieving their ambition?
