Mako: A Princess Riddled with Distrust
Distrust of Mako Erupted in the Wake of Komuro Documents
In the midst of her marriage problems with Komuro,
Mako is also rapidly losing her reputation.
It was triggered by the April 9 press conference of
Takaharu Kachi, the Imperial Heir Apparent.

The day before, on April 8, Komuro released a
28-page document explaining his financial troubles. The contents of the
document drew a roar of criticism from the public. The following day was
Friday's regular press conference.
Mr. Kachi spoke about Mr. Komuro's financial troubles. Mako has been consulting with him since the news of the troubles first broke," he said, adding that he had heard that "Mako's wishes were a major factor" in Mr. Komuro's decision not to hand over the money without discussing it and to resolve the issue by properly discussing their mutual understanding, which he had mentioned in his document.
He also conveyed the following comment from Mako.
“I would be grateful if there are people who read the documents released this time and understand that there was a lot going on.”
This statement also brought a strong reaction from
the Japanese people. The royal family is pure and innocent and should not
interfere in the financial troubles between private citizens. Mako, however, is
involved in one side of the trouble and is trying to make the other side give
up. When the other party, her former fiancé, announced at the end of 2020 that
he had given up on seeking repayment of the debt, it was probably because he
sensed Mako's intentions against Komuro's stubborn attitude that he would not
repay the debt.
However, the image of the ex-fiancee reported in the media is that of an old man who is in need and whose health is failing. He continued to give money to Kei Komuro's mother, Kayo, during the engagement out of sympathy for her widowed condition, and it would be too "one-sided" for the royal family to make him give up repayment of the 4 million yen.
Mako's image fell to the ground here, and dry comments such as "I thought Mako was a pure young lady being deceived, but she's actually a good match for Komuro" and "I don't want to give this person an honorific title" became prominent on the Internet.
In addition, the Imperial Heir Apparent is the head
of the Imperial Heirship, which supports the Akishino family. It is believed
that it was the intention of Akishino and his wife that Kaji-Daio revealed
Mako's intentions as stated above. They felt that Mako had become so devoted to
the Komuros that she had lost sight of what she should be as a member of the Imperial
Family, and they wanted to wake her up by publicizing her complicity in the
debt problem and exposing her to public criticism.
Abusing Emperor’s Name?
As a matter of fact, there was an event that had the
public scratching their heads even before that.
In November of 2020, shortly after the completion of the ceremony for her father, Prince Akishino, to succeed to the throne, Mako suddenly released a document that she called her "feelings. In the document, Mako wrote that Her Majesty the Emperor and Empress "respect my feelings and watch over me quietly," as if they agreed with her.
It became a hot topic of conversation, saying, "It is strange to use the emperor and empress as if they are your allies.
Moreover, the above words were easily overturned at
the Emperor's press conference three months later.
(For more information on the Emperor's words, see this article.)
The Emperor, who is known for his careful choice of
words, not only did not use the word "respect" at all, but also
ordered that "I hope Princess Mako will discuss this matter with her
parents.
So it became clear that the words about the emperor
in the above "feelings" were not true.
From the point of view of the people who revere His
Majesty the Emperor, it is understandable that they are angry with Mako for
deceiving them about his name.
"#Mako please ‘desertion marriage’"
As a result of the public's growing disenchantment
with Mako, the phrase "#Mako, please ‘desertion marriage’" began
trending on Twitter in late April. What this means is that Mako should withdraw
from the lump sum, leave the imperial family, become a commoner, and marry
Komuro without using any tax money.
It is said that Mako herself wants to leave the
imperial family and escape overseas, and Komuro is her partner for both
purposes. If Mako really wants to do this, she will be asked whether she will
give up the "female monarchy" and all other privileges of the imperial
family and marry Komuro, in addition to declining the lump-sum payment.
For the lump-sum payment, see here.
