What is Kei Komuro's Debt Problem

What is the Komuro's Debt Problem?

After the death of Kei Komuro's father, Kei's mother Kayo, received financial support of over 4 million yen (some $36.44K) from her then fiancé during the engagement period in the name of Kei's school fees and living expenses. After the engagement was dissolved, the former fiancé requested that these monies be repaid as a loan, but Komuro's mother and Kei did not repay the money, claiming that it was a donation.

The issue was first reported by the Japanese women's weekly magazine, Shukan Josei, in December 2017, three months after the announcement of Mako and Komuro's informal engagement.

In the article above, we can see from the entries in the bank passbook that the ex-fiancee had been sending money one after another as Kayo told him to.

This issue triggered various scandals involving Komuro's mother and Kei, which came to light one after another.

'The Financial Issues Had Been Resolved.'

In January 2019, Komuro released a document in which he stated that he and his mother recognized that the financial issues had been resolved.

This sparked strong criticism from the public.

The ex-fiancée is said to be living in poverty, having given up his apartment and the car he was driving as a result of sending as much as 4 million yen to the Komuro mother and son. From March of 2019, he appointed a representative to solve the problem, but the fact that this representative was a reporter from a weekly magazine was also a problem. His ex-fiancee did not have the money to hire a lawyer, and the reporter, sympathetic to his character, offered to represent him.

Komuro's side also retained a representative, but talks between the representatives never went anywhere.

Release of 28-Page Document

In December 2020, following Mako's announcement of her "feelings" and Prince Akishino's statement on his approval of the marriage, the previous month, Nishimura, the Secretary of the Imperial Household Agency, requested an explanation from Komuro regarding the money issue.

In April 2021, Komuro released a 28-page, 40,000-word document explaining the situation.

However, the content of the document was highly criticized by the public, as it claimed that the money was a gift, not a debt, based on the fact that there was a recording of the ex-fiancé saying that he had no intention of having the money repaid, blamed the ex-fiancé for claiming the debt, and refused to repay the money or pay the settlement.

Four days later, perhaps concerned about the public criticism, Komuro said through his agent that he was ready to pay the settlement money, and notified his ex-fiancée to that effect.

Release of Audio Evidence Puts Komuro in a Difficult Position

The ex-fiancée revealed the existence of a recording of herself clearly stating that she wanted to be repaid in a conversation that took place later than Komuro's claim that she had no intention of having the money repaid, and Shukan Bunshun published the recording on the Internet. This made Komuro's previous claim that he recognized that the matter had been settled false. The fact that Kei's voice was included in the recording also revealed that Kei was deeply involved in his mother's debt problem.

The ex-fiancee later said, "I am ready to come to the table to solve the problem, but the counterpart will be Kayo, not Kei.” at end of the April.

However, since then, there has been no contact from Kei or Kayo's side to the ex-fiancé, and the issue has once again become an impasse and remains unresolved.
