"Return of the Former imperial family" Dominant at Last Hearing of Advisory Panel
No Change in Current Order of Succession to Throne
On June 7, the Japanese government held the
fifth hearing of experts at the advisory panel to discuss a stable succession
to the throne, thus completing the entire hearing schedule.

According to media reports, the government
will not change the current order of succession to the throne, with Prince
Akishino in first place and his eldest son, Prince Eugene, in second place. As
a future issue, the government will discuss the pros and cons of a female or
female line emperor. They will take into account the intentions of each party and
aim to reach a consensus by autumn.
At the hearing, four experts on culture,
the performing arts, and Shintoism gave their opinions. All four were cautious
about the eligibility of the female line, which has the emperor's blood only on
the mother's side, to succeed to the throne, but all four were positive about
the restoration of the former imperial family, which left the imperial register
after World War II, to maintain the male line.
In response to this report, the Japanese
Internet is filled with many voices of criticism and questions.
“If it is not going to be changed, then what was the purpose of creating it and why were so many experts invited?
At the very least, the government must respond to the Diet's request in its supplementary resolution to ‘study the matter so that it is consistent as a whole.’
“The possibility of the birth of Emperor Aiko has been eliminated.
I guess that means that there is no more possibility of the birth of Emperor Aiko.
Is it safe to transfer the imperial line to the Akishino family?
If Emperor Aiko is not the next in line after Emperor Imaue, I feel that the abolition of the Emperor System is unavoidable.“
“The criteria for selecting experts is a mystery to me. It seems as if they have come to a conclusion and are calling in those who are convenient. Since there is only one successor young enough to the throne to the current emperor, the system should be changed as soon as possible.
It is a waste of taxpayers' money to create a female imperial family and an imperial princess system when we do not recognize the female line and female emperor.”
“It may not be necessary to decide now whether to maintain the male line or not, but it is time to change it to allow for a female emperor in the male line.
It should be an item decided during the Meiji era and not something to change the long history.
The Imperial Household Law should be changed at least for that item.
If we don't change it now, His Imperial Highness Prince Keimiya, a direct descendant of the Emperor, will become a young member of the Imperial Family and reach the age of marriage. It is not too late for her to marry off.
We should not ignore what many of the people want.”
Public opinion polls conducted by the
Japanese media so far show that the majority of the Japanese people are in
favor of both a female emperor and a female emperor, against the backdrop of
the public popularity of the Emperor's only daughter, Princess Aiko, and the
unpopularity of the Akishino family.
