Vaccinations Done for IF Members Aged 65 and Over

Six members of the Japanese Imperial Family over the age of 65, including the Emperor and Empress, were vaccinated against the new coronavirus on the 1st of this month.

The Emperor Emeritus and his wife were vaccinated at their residence, Sento Temporary Palace (Minato-ku, Tokyo), while Prince and Princess Hitachi, Princess Nobuko Tomohito, and Princess Hisako Takamado were vaccinated at the Imperial Household Agency Hospital in the Imperial Palace. The Asahi Shimbun reported this as a story from an official. This is the first time that members of the Imperial Family have been vaccinated.

According to media reports, seven members of the Imperial Family, including the 87-year-old Emperor Emeritus Akihito and the 86-year-old Empress Emerita Michiko, are eligible for the priority vaccination program for those over 65 years old, and six others, excluding the 97-year-old Princess Yuriko of Mikasa, have been vaccinated.

The members of the Imperial Family are not registered as residents in municipalities and are not issued vaccination coupons like ordinary citizens. The Imperial Household Agency said that it would "proceed with the vaccination of the members of the Imperial Family in accordance with their respective intentions in accordance with the government's policy," and that it would coordinate with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to secure vaccines for the members of the IF who cannot receive vaccination coupons.

Prince Hitachi, the third in line of succession to the throne,  is the younger brother of the Emperor and lives with Princess Hanako at the Prince Hitachi residence in Shibuya, Tokyo. Nobuko is the wife of the late Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, popularly known as His Highness the Bearded Prince, and the younger sister of Finance MinisterTaro Aso. Hisako is the wife of the late Prince Takamado.

In other countries, the royal family has taken the lead in receiving vaccinations and some of them have been publicized, but in Japan, the outlook for vaccine supply was unclear until recently, so the IF was not given priority, and they were vaccinated in the same order as the public. The elderly members of IF are said to be at low risk of infection as they have fewer opportunities to go out due to the corona disease. Their aides, who support them in their daily lives, have also been working hard to prevent infection by reducing face-to-face contact and avoiding commuting on public transportation.
