Renovation of Imperial Palace Completed; Emperor and Family to Move in in September
The renovation of the former Fukiage Sento
Palace (New Palace) at the Imperial Palace, the new home of the Emperor and his
family, was completed and opened to the press on July 14. In the Heisei
era, it was the residence of the Emperor and his wife, and construction had
been underway since March of last year, after the replacement of the Emperor.

The new Imperial Palace is a reinforced
concrete structure with one basement floor and two stories above ground. It has
private areas such as the rooms of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress and Princess Aiko, a reception area for meeting foreign dignitaries, and an office area for
the staff.
As you enter the entrance, a glass-walled
courtyard spreads out in front of you, surrounded by 11 rooms, including a room
where Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress listen to lectures from experts,
a rest room for visitors, and a dining room. According to the Imperial
Household Agency, the main focus of the construction work was to renovate the
aging water facilities, and the two Majesties had a meeting there.
Their Majesties and Princess Aiko will
move from the current Akasaka Palace (Moto-Akasaka, Tokyo) to the new Palace in
September. After that, the Akasaka Imperial Palace will undergo construction to
make it barrier-free, and upon completion, the Emperor and Princess will move
from the Sento Temporary Palace (Minato-ku, Tokyo).
According to the Imperial Household Agency,
it was originally planned that Their Majesties and Princess Aiko
would move into the new palace by the end of last fiscal year, but construction
was delayed due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. The cost of the
construction was about 870 million yen.
Meanwhile, the residence of the Akishino family is being renovated at a cost of about 5.4 billion yen, raising questions from the public in the midst of the corona recession.
