Kei Komuro returns to Japan on 27, quarantined for 14 days at his mother's home in Yokohama
Komuro Returns Home
Kei Komuro, whose marriage to Princess
Mako, the eldest daughter of Prince and Princess Akishino, is being coordinated,
returned to Japan from the U.S. for the first time in three years on the
afternoon of March 27. The Imperial Household Agency is preparing for the
marriage next month and is expected to make an announcement soon.
The passenger plane with Kei Komuro (29) on
board departed from the airport in New York, U.S.A. at around 2:40 a.m. on the
27th (Japan time), and arrived at Narita Airport just after 3:20 p.m. on the
27th.
Komuro was dressed in a suit with his
long hair tied back and no tie, just as he had been when he left the United
States.
He stopped in front of the press and bowed
profusely, then walked quickly to the test for the new coronavirus that was
required upon his return.
This is the first time for Komuro to
return to Japan since he came to the U.S. three years ago in August to be
admitted as a lawyer in the state of New York.
After the inspection, Komuro returned to
his home in Yokohama by car, accompanied by a police vehicle for security
purposes and arrived at his apartment in Yokohama City just after 7:00
p.m. He did not answer questions from the press, but turned around at the
entrance, bowed deeply, and walked into the building.
He will spend the 14-day waiting period at
home to protect against the new coronavirus, and wait until the waiting period
is over to be reunited with Mako for the first time in about three years.
The Imperial Household Agency is preparing
for the marriage next month and is expected to make an announcement soon.
What is the procedure for marriage?
In order for Mako to marry Komuro, she will
need to submit a marriage notification at the municipal office just like any
other person.
It is expected that a representative of the
IHA, such as a staff member, will submit the application. If accepted, a new
family register will be created and Princess Mako will leave the Imperial
Family.
On the other hand, the "Imperial
Record," which is the family register of the Imperial Family, will include
the fact that Mako left the Imperial Family after her marriage.
After registering their marriage, Mako and
Komuro are expected to hold a press conference together to report on their
marriage.
She and Komuro will start living
together in the U.S., and after establishing their family register, they will
apply for passports and other procedures.
Financial troubles unresolved
The "financial troubles" between Komuro's mother and her former fiancé were reported one after another in
weekly magazines after the end of 2017, when the engagement between Princess
Mako and Komuro was informally confirmed.
The man claimed that he had supported her and Kei Komuro with a total of about 4 million yen in living expenses over a two-year period
up to 2012, when the engagement was dissolved, and demanded repayment.
In April this year, Komuro, who was
criticized by the public for releasing a document detailing his financial
troubles, turned around and revealed his intention to give the man a
settlement.
This month, however, Komuro's lawyer and
the man's representative met to negotiate the payment of the settlement, but no
significant progress was made.
Chief Cabinet Secretary : "We will watch the situation quietly."
Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato said at press conference on the 27th afternoon, "I am aware of the media reports, but there is nothing in particular that the government would like to say about the future. As I have said in the past, the government's position is to quietly watch over Mako's marriage.
