Is This Paper or Manual? Kei Komuro Wins NY State Bar Association Competition
On the 26th, the same day as Mako and Kei
Komuro's wedding, the New York State Bar Association, where the two will be
based for the rest of their lives, held an award ceremony online for the essay
competition won by Kei, and congratulated him on his marriage.
NY State Bar Association:
"I wish him (Kei) all the best in his
marriage and congratulate him on his win. It just so happens that this award is
also a wedding gift."
Komuro, the winner, was not present at the
event, but the organizers congratulated him on his marriage to Ms. Mako.
In addition, a representative of the bar
association spoke highly of Komuro's
paper, saying that it was not only an academic legal paper, but also a very
practical one.
By the way, I was able to read this paper, "Compliance Problems in Website Accessibility and Implications for Entrepreneurs By Kei Komuro," on the web.
NY Business Law Journal – Vol. 25 No. 1 - New York State Bar Association (nysba.org)
(Komuro's paper starts on page 29.)
MY first impression was that it is not what one would normally call a thesis. I'm not familiar with legal papers, but isn't this more like a manual for entrepreneurs or a manuscript for a presentation? That was the question.
As a manual or a presentation manuscript,
there may be a certain value in having comprehensive contents. However, such
documents are nothing more than common business documents that one is forced to
produce to a great extent when one becomes an employee of a law firm.
Did he really want to show that he was an
effective law clerk at a law firm and that he could make entrepreneurs feel
threatened by legal issues and pull them in as clients? That may certainly be
his urgent task.
I'm
sorry to say that I can't help but wonder what kind of level the New York State
Bar Association is at when it evaluates this level of merely
"practical" writing as "academic". If you are a regular reader of
this blog, you will naturally think about the forces that may have worked
behind it.
