Prince Hisahito to Enter High School Attached to Tsukuba University, IHA Announces

On February 16, the Imperial Household Agency announced that Prince Hisahito, the only son of the Akishino family and second in line of succession to the throne, will enroll in the National High School Attached to Tsukuba University (Tsukufu, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo) in April using the "Affiliated School Admission System. Prince Hisahito is in the third year of junior high school at Ochanomizu University. Since Ochanomizu High School is an all-girls school, there has been a lot of attention on where he will go.

Both the University of Tsukuba and Ochanomizu Women's University have established a system that allows students who are recommended by both universities to enter their respective affiliated schools. According to the IHA, Prince Hisahito took advantage of this system “because his academic performance was excellent and he met the conditions for recommendation.” In addition to the internal selection process, he took the five-subject "academic achievement test" on the 13th of this month, and his acceptance was confirmed.

Tsukufu is a prestigious school founded in 1888 and is known as a school of advancement with nearly 30 students passing the entrance exam to Tokyo University every year. After gathering information from examination booklets and online videos, and after consulting with his parents based on the opinions of people in the education field, Prince Hisahito chose Tsukufu as his first choice because of its educational policy of independence, self-reliance, and freedom, according to IHA. Tsukufu and Ochanomizu University Junior High School are located in the same neighborhood.

Hisahito's entrance examination to Tsukufu was preceded by a report in a weekly magazine. When it was reported that he was confirmed to enter Tsukufu through the "Affiliated School Admission System", he was heavily bashed by the public, and the IHA restrained the media from "speculating and reporting".

On the 13th of this month, when Hisahito appeared at the general entrance examination hall of Tsukufu, it was widely reported on TV and other media.

Did Hisahito really have the academic ability to pass the general entrance exam for Tsukufu?

According to the February 17th edition of Shukan Bunshun, there are two possibilities for Hisahito's taking the general entrance exam.

One is that Hisahito had already received an offer of admission through the affiliated school system, but he took both the general entrance exam and the entrance exam. If he is accepted in the general entrance exam, that's fine, and if he is not accepted, he will still be admitted through the partner school system.

The other possibility is that students who have been offered admission through the partner school system are also required to take an academic test at the entrance examination site to see how well they have learned up to the third grade, and that their score has nothing to do with whether they pass or fail.

It is said that the next goal of Hisahito's mother, Crown Princess Kiko, is to get her son recommended for admission to Tokyo University. Kiko's ambition to give her son the best educational background is endless.
