Kei Komuro failed the bar exam on his second try? No name on the list of successful applicants
Regarding the New York State bar exam that
Kei Komuro, married to ex-Japanese princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Prince
and Princess Akishino, is challenging, it was learned on April 15 (Japan
Standard Time) that the name believed to be that of Mr. Komuro is not on the
list of successful applicants for the February exam.
Pass/fail for the exam, which was held in
February of this year, was notified to examinees on the 13th (local time), and
around 10:00 a.m. on the 14th (local time). The results were announced on the
website of the state bar exam board at the local level. There was no mention of
a name believed to be Ms. Komuro among the successful applicants listed on the
website.

It is possible that Mr. Komuro was not
accepted, although this is not yet confirmed, since some people do not wish
their names to be made public at the acceptance announcement.
According to the official website of the
bar exam, there were 1,610 retake groups with a pass rate of 30%. The pass
rate, including the first-time group, was 45%, down 4 percentage points from
the overall pass rate of 49% for last February's exam.
Komuro completed law school last May and
made his first attempt at the bar exam in July, but found out he had failed
shortly after his marriage in October. He has been working as a law clerk at a
major local law firm while working toward her certification. His annual income
as a law clerk is estimated to be about 5.5 million yen (about US$43,500).
Generally, if a candidate fails the bar
exam a second time, it is difficult for him or her to continue working at the
law firm as is, and he or she may be dismissed. If Komuro were to make a third
attempt at the bar exam this July, the deadline for entry would be April 30.
Mr. and Mrs. Komuro have been in the U.S. for five months. His wife Mako is said to have begun volunteering at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, and her signature "Mako Komuro" is confirmed at the end of the text of the painting description on the museum's website.
