Princess Aiko is 'Friend-Oriented': Her Alma Mater Gakushuin Junior and Senior High School Shares Episodes
As the only daughter of Their Majesties the
Emperor and Empress, Her Imperial Highness Princess Toshinomiya Aiko of Japan,
celebrated her 20th birthday on the 1st, the Gakushuin, where she studied from
elementary school to her current university, revealed episodes of Aiko's life to the press. They
said that Aiko had "high sensitivity and straightforward feelings"
and was a friend-oriented student.
The Gakushuin Junior and Senior High School
teachers responded in writing to questions from the Imperial Press Association
on the occasion of Princess Aiko's birthday.
When Princess Aiko was in high school, she
loved her P.E. classes and excelled at softball, a sport that both the Emperor
and Empress were familiar with. At the field day, she participated in the
"dribbling relay" event from the first year of junior high to the
third year of high school, and won the event in the third year of high school
after practicing with her friends. In her class, she worried about her absent
friends. "She was very friend-oriented and had a fulfilling school life
with many friends," said the third-year high school principal.
In the summer of 2018, she studied abroad
for a short time at Eton School in the UK. She had a great time and even wrote
a tanka poem about her memories in her Japanese expression class. In her Japanese
classical literature and ancient language class, she was a leader in a group
presentation on the Tale of Genji, and she is currently studying in the
Japanese Language and Literature Department at university.
Princess Aiko was also very active in
extracurricular activities. In the second year of junior high school, she
volunteered to participate in the Numazu Coastal School, where she swam three
kilometers. In her first year of high school, she enjoyed mountain climbing, a
hobby of His Majesty the Emperor. In her essay after returning to Tokyo, she
wrote about her impressions and recalled her memories of climbing with Their
Majesties.
At the end of the episodes, all the
administrators of the junior and senior high schools wrote a message to Her
Imperial Highness Princess Aiko: "Her careful efforts in everything she
does are due to her deep interest in many things, her high sensitivity and her
straightforward mind. We sincerely hope that Her Imperial Highness will
continue to play an active role in the world.
