Princess Aiko Attends Her First Imperial Ritual: People Impressed by Her Dignified Demeano
Princess Aiko visits the Emperor and Empress at an adult event on the afternoon of December 5
On December 25, the anniversary of the
death of Emperor Taisho, Her Imperial Highness Princess Toshinomiya Aiko, the only
daughter of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, who reached the age of
majority on December 1, attended a palace ritual at the Imperial Palace for the
first time.
As the palace ritual is a private religious
event and not an official duty, no cameras were allowed to cover the event, but
Princess Aiko wore a long off-white coat and a hat of the same color, and was
the first of the female members of the Imperial Family to pay her respects in a
calm manner.
Since her birthday on December 1 and her
coming-of-age event on December 5, the news coverage of the Imperial Family has
been all about Princess Aiko. The scandalous marriage of Mako, the eldest
daughter of Prince Akishino, to Komuro had cast a dark shadow over the image of
the Imperial Family, but with the coming of age of Princess Aiko, the tide has
turned and the entire Imperial Family is beginning to regain its brightness.
According to the December 26 edition of
Bunshun Online, a member of the Imperial Household Agency said.
“Aiko's appearance is graceful and
splendid. When I saw her receiving the congratulations, her posture and bowing
were beautiful, and I think her behavior was just like Their Majesties.
As a child of the Togu family, Aiko has
been under the constant scrutiny of the public and the media since she was a
small child. I think one of the main reasons why Aiko has grown up so well is
that she was able to see how Their Majesties interacted with people in such an
environment.”
"Their Majesties talk with many
different people, and they don't take a 'keep-away' attitude toward any person,
but rather keep a good distance so as not to make them feel uncomfortable. I
believe that Aiko has naturally learned such a sense of distance in socializing
with others.”
Many people consider this natural transmission
of how to interact with people and how to be oneself from one's parents to be so-called "imperial studies education".
Apart from the report of the government's advisory
panel that postponed the debate on "female emperors and female lineage
emperors," public opinion polls show that the majority of the Japanese
people approve of them, and the longing for "Emperor Aiko" is growing
day by day.
